Why a gnome was a symbol of the first wooden items collection …
In 1989, spurred by a desire to reconnect with a local production tradition that was as ancient as it was deep-rooted, Alessi introduced a collection of wooden articles made by artisans in Valle Strona to its catalogue.
Traditional designers worked on this project (Branzi, Dalisi, Giovannoni, Glaser, Graves, Iosa-Ghini, Prey, Sottsass with Irvine, Cibic e Rayan, Venturini). In addition it was a sort of training programme for many young designers (Von Allmen, Animal Design, Barange e Rabat, Bortolani e Beccheli, Brass, Conti, Migliore e Servetto, Pagani, Pandolfo, Pironi, Pozzoli e Ribet, Rooz, Suchodolski)”.
The first symbol or logotype, used back in 1865 in the catalogues of Battista Piazza company to mark its products, was a sprite or gnome from the woods called “twergi” (Tuérzi) in the local dialect.
In this way, the trade-mark “Twergi” has been re-born, drawn and projected in three dimensions by Milton Glaser: an object-symbol made on the lathe, which moved this new project a little towards a dimension of fantasy and magic.
Since 1998, all Twergi products have become part of the Alessi catalogue, where they have kept their own identity as craftsman-made articles in a large of different woods.
Our goal is to provide you with original vintage design.
