Bronze Sculpture of an African Woman in the style of Karl Hagenauer

This elegant bronze sculpture of an African woman is made in the style of Karl Hagenauer. It can be dated in the 1950s.
The South Ndebele people of Africa wear neck rings as part of their traditional dress and as a sign of wealth and status. Only married women are allowed to wear the rings, called dzilla. Metal rings are also worn on different parts of the body, not just on the neck. Traditionally these rings are given to a wife by her husband, and not removed until the husband’s death; however, these rings are Individual and do not function as a body modification. The rings are usually made of copper or brass.

This bronze sculpture of an African woman carrying a jug was surely inspired by the Ndebele woman. The bronze is black and gold patinated.
This elegant abstracted sculpture is in very good condition. A nice piece of art.
