This oak Vanitas sculpture dates from the 19th century. The carved wood was painted over. The skull wears a laurel wreath that symbolizes the victory of death: we will all die someday. Memento Mori.
The Vanitas theme, which was already used in Roman times, became popular in the Baroque.
This sculpture is a rare and decorative piece. We’ve bought it in this condition.
